Mercer Island, WA - July 28 2012 - On July 28, Al Weaver, 74-year-old Gig Harbor resident and triathlon
junkie, will be joined by his grandson, and at least 10 other seniors in his age bracket at the 3 rd Annual
Islander Aquathon, a race where athletes will swim and run through Mercer Island’s Luther Burbank
Park. This year, the race is host to the 2012 USA Triathlon Aquathon National Championship, so athletes
of all ages from around the country will complete a 1500 meter swim followed by a 10k run. Racers can
also register for the Short Course - a 750 meter swim followed by a 5k run, or the Kids’ Splash and Dash.
Al Weaver will inspire anyone to get moving. Through accidents, surgeries, and ongoing medical
conditions, Al keeps coming back to swimming, biking, and running. Al is fiercely competitive and loves
the thrill of the race. ‘It’s hard to get motivated to get up and train when it’s dark outside and you know
it’s going to be cold. But once you’re 100 yards into a race, you don’t think about anything else,’ says Al.
Al is especially excited for the race this year, since he’s hoping to make it into the national USA Triathlon
rankings, for which the Islander is a qualifier. He isn’t worried about the competition. Al grew up as
a butterflyer and has mastered strong freestyle for events like these. ‘There are a lot of 70-year-old
runners out there,’ he says with a competitive smile, ‘I can out-swim ‘em!’

Swimming and running isn't just for adults!  The Islander Aquathon is hosting one of 30 national aquathon events for kids between the ages of 7 and 15.  This race is all about participating, having fun, and getting some exercise.  The race consists of a 100 meter swim and 1 kilometer run for kids 7 to 10 years old and a 200 meter swim and 2 kilometer run for kids 11 to 15.  Age is determined by the age on race day, not at the end of the year.

Courses are shown below (1 lap for the short race, 2 loops for the longer race).  Lifeguards will keep the swim safe and fun and volunteers on the run course will keep youngsters on course.

The race will be held BEFORE all adult events on race day.  See event schedule/information page for more information.

Cost is $25, which includes a $10 one day USAT license, or $15 if participant is already a USAT member.  All participants will receive a t-shirt, medal, and post-race food.

You can read more about the series at the USAT page here.
